These Cardinals keep chugging along and don't feel sorry for themselves no matter what happens. Lose 20-2 to the Phillies? No problem; we'll bounce back and win the next two. Lose Albert Pujols to what looked at the time to be a severe injury? Ahh, we'll come back with a 10 spot on Cincy. Swept by the Royals? Let's come back with two wins at Fenway Park.
Adam Kennedy at 1st Base? Just... what? Any time Adam Kennedy is starting at first base, there's reason for minimal optimism (otherwise known as pessimism). But that didn't stop the Birds from earning their first regular season win at Comerica Park since 2001. Eight Cardinals had at least one hit and five had at least one RBI. That would be the definition of a team effort, I believe. A Closer Look Through Mike Shannon's La Russa Specs
Braden Looper improved to 9-5 and appeared to be in for another outstanding effort before Gary Sheffield sent him to the showers in the 7th. Sheffield's bomb marked the third homer for the Tigers. Brendan Ryan had three hits and two RBI, jumping his average to .302. With Cesar Izturis on the DL, Ryan has a chance to get a leg up on Cesar. See how I did that? Cesar has hamstring issues and I said "leg up". Too funny.
The Friends of Tony List Continues to Grow in Size and Obscurity
Tony's guests of honor Tuesday in Detroit included new Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean - former Marquette coach - and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. Detroit Lions GM Matt Millen was also invited by La Russa, but he got lost on the freeway and couldn't find the stadium.
You Be the Judge
If it was biologically possible, I would argue that Nick Stavinoah is the son of Aaron Miles and Jeff Suppan.
Scrap-O-Meter This was the very definition of scrappy. The 2008 bunch overall is pretty scrappy, but when you're without your two best pitchers and your Pujols among men, an 8-4 win over a surging Tigers squad is pretty Eckstein-ian any way you slice it. Adam Kennedy had to borrow somebody else's glove for Pujols' sake.
